Game NotesWhat a performance our WOMENS TEAM put on last Wednesday evening for our loyal travelling support who braved the weather and trekked to Billericay Town’s New Lodge Stadium. A 2-0 loss against a team two steps above us in the Pyramid suggests a run of the mill game with a predictable outcome. But nothing could be further from the truth as they turned in what must be well up among their best efforts ever . In their 25 year existence I have seen the great majority of their matches and am hard pressed to recall a better one. If our opponents thought their higher status would give them a comfortable edge such expectations would have been well and truly dispelled by the midway point of the first half .for we had seized the initiative right from the off and Billericay had to sharpen up as the half wore on for we had at the very least matched them in every facet of the game and continued to do so for the whole 90 minutes – determination, teamwork, commitment, skill et al - except for the rather important one of putting the ball in the net. That was not for the want of trying but as we know all too well football can be a cruel game in which teams do not always get what they deserve as was amply demonstrated that evening. We were somewhat unfortunate to be trailing at half time to a close range finish after some 25 minutes of end to end play. After the interval it took only a minute for that lead to be doubled as Billericay launched a swift raid down the left, cut inside and finished clinically. Perhaps the girls have seen too many first team matches and thought that such a concession is now a mandatory contribution to a game ! Another blow arrived just a few minutes later when a player who had foolishly been booked a minute or two earlier for giving the referee “lip” executed a tackle which she was bound to find improper and her brandishing of another yellow and a red inevitably followed. Some teams might have called it a day and been resigned to their fate at this stage But not this squad. Far from it; they simply shrugged off the handicap and for the lengthy remainder of the half gave their National League Premier South Division opponents a real run for their money, so much so that it was difficult to realise we were a player short. Even in added time we were still pressing forward urgently and forcing corners in search of a consolation goal which was the very least we deserved. A penalty shoot out would have been well merited. But it just wasn’t to be their day. An unknowing neutral spectator would have found it well nigh impossible to work out which team was National and which Regional.

The magnificent 15 were:- GK Liamara Hensel - Burg Connie Wakeford Hayley Che Mujh Lexi Wade Emily Pickard Chloe Ions Tara Walsh Kaya Bamber Caitlen Star Ronnell Humes Shawna Harvey SUBS (all used) GK Emma Roberts Erin Radburn Jada Pollendine Summer Young
That’s a squad consisting of 13 teenagers and 2 “old ladies” already in their 20s and every one of them gave their all and did themselves and the Club proud – including she who was dismissed but had given the home team plenty of cause for concern in the first half.
