GLORIOUS END TO THE SEASON

DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR BOROUGH WOMEN

On Sunday 14th May Haringey Borough Women concluded the most exciting season in their 18 year existence, throughout which they have thoroughly enjoyed being members of the Eastern Region Womens League, with a convincing 5-1 win against Cambridge City  in the League Cup Final at the Hertfordshire FA County Ground in Letchworth.       This completed the League and Cup Double as they had come from behind in their final League game 3 weeks ago to finish two points  above  their opponents who had started that match as leaders.   Their League Championship will see them promoted to Division One South East of the Womens Premier League next season with matches which will include “local derbies” with Enfield Town.

Borough got off to a flying start  with Klesha Darroux moving in smoothly from the left to plant an accurate finish in the far top corner after only five minutes.     And it was Klesha who doubled the lead a few minutes later with a thumping header as she connected with Brooke Hills well flighted corner.    Before half time Klesha had completed her hat-trick with a composed low finish as she ran on to a through ball;   and had some chances easier than those scored been converted Borough would have been “home and dry” by the interval.    But as was to be expected from a team with nothing to lose Cambridge exerted much greater pressure in the second half and Borough’s defence quickly learned that they had a vital contribution to make to ensure  victory.    In the event City found the net only once, around the mid-half mark, courtesy of a chance created by one of a number of  free-kicks conceded by Borough in dangerous areas.  Borough ‘keeper Cherkish Young was often in action and did well to hold on to a close range blast that would have reduced the margin to a single goal.    But as the half wore on Borough reasserted themselves and had twice gone close before Karesha Iton steadied nerves ten minutes from time with a precise lofted shot into the empty net from well outside the penalty area when the City ‘keeper had rushed out to the edge of the box  to make a block but could not keep control of the ball.     Jaidene Browne completed the scoring from the spot when Anele Komani was brought down.

That Jaidene should have scored the last goal of the season, and was also awarded “player of the match” status by the referee,  was a fitting tribute to the groundwork of her father Steve Browne who was in his third year as Manager and had steered the Club to Championship favourites status by the half way mark of the season before it was rocked when he lost his battle with cancer on New Years Day.   After the inevitable negative effect on the teams performance leading to four draws  - points  which eventually proved vital  whereas no draws had occurred during Steve’s reign - the team regained  its best form and  won its last three games to secure the Championship, promotion and the Cup.

The Cup winning squad (rolling substitutes allowed) was     CHERKISH YOUNG,     BROOKE HILLS,  ROBYN REARDON,  ROISIN CORMACK,  SHAYDEAN GORMAN, MORGAN LUNDBERG,    SHERNELLE FRANCOIS,    KARESHA ITON,    ANELE KOMANI,    JULIA CARRUTHERS,   KLESHA DARROUX,  JAIDENE BROWNE,   ROXANNE ESHUN,  SHANICE NOURRICE,    MARTINA STANKOVA,   STEPHANIE COOPER.

2016/17 ALMOST AT AN END NOW

Sadly, although the Ryman League semi-final play-off at Maldon & Tiptree provided a thriller of a game we ended up 4-5 losers on the night.

So the final competitive game of the season will be that of the WOMEN’s TEAM when they seek to add the League Cup to complete the double as they leave the Eastern Region Womens League after 17 years as Champions and thus promoted to the Womens Premier League.   It will be at the Hertfordshire FA’s County Ground (Baldock Road, Letchworth Garden City, SG6 2EN) on Sunday 14th May (3pm) when Cambridge City will be the opponents. Support would be very welcome.

TRAGIC START TO NEW YEAR - A MESSAGE FROM CLUB CHAIRMAN AKI ACHILLEA

It is with great sadness that the New Year started with the terrible news that the manager of the Haringey Borough Women’s team Steve Browne lost his long battle with cancer in the early hours of 2017. Steve was a true inspiration not only to the girls that he coached from a young age bringing them to Boro in 2014 but also to anyone and everyone who met him at our Club. He never made a fuss of his illness and was always discussing with such hope and anticipation the future plans for the Women’s team.   He attended the women’s games right up until the end when he was so ill yet he was so determined to demonstrate from the sidelines his support for his team. His loss will be hard felt by all of us and I express our deepest condolences and best wishes to his wife Sonia, their children and other members of his family. A finer gentleman you would struggle to find anywhere in any walk of life.    Stephen's funeral took place on 10th February at the Dominion Centre, 9 The Broadway,  High Road, Wood Green.  Afterwards, there was  a Tribute Reception at the Decorium Banqueting Suite, 22 Western Road, Wood Green
