A GREAT BEGINNING…….but YET ANOTHER ODD GOAL DEFEAT

After only 4 minutes Zayshaun Asamoah (Derek’s son) turned Mekhi McLeod’s low cross from the left into the net from close range. Cambridge City, our play-off chasing hosts then put us under sustained pressure but we kept our goal intact until our luck ran out in the 32nd minute when a handball in the build up to George Smith’s equaliser was not spotted. 7 minutes later we were behind as in a scramble around our crowded goalmouth a fine block of a close range effort fell kindly for Jack Thompson.     Throughout the game we made a mockery of the 19 point gap we brought to their fine, just opened, new Stadium for we certainly matched our opponents throughout the match and probably had slightly the better of a fiercely fought second half with multiple chances for both teams, but of compensatory good fortune for our first half unlucky breaks was there none; so yet again we finished empty handed from a game in which we certainly deserved some reward. The points gap thus increased to 22 points and as other results were not favourable to us we fell from 19th to 21st in the table.   Without wishing to sound too self-pitying the fact is that we have lost 9 of our 16 defeats by a one goal margin and drawn 7 times.   Just a smidgeon of luck resulting in an extra goal or one less against in half of those games would have increased our points haul to round 30 or so leaving us well clear of the drop zone; but the reality is that we now have just 15 games from which half of the available points would still most likely leave us right on the cusp of the survival / drop zone divide.   Next Saturday we face the hardest possible start to that task as we visit League leaders Felixstowe & Walton United for the second time this season in which the first occasion saw them romp to a 4-0 FA Trophy win. But it is worth noting that today, when they entertained one of our fellow relegation fighters Sporting Bengal United ( twice defeated by us this season ) they needed 81st and 84th minute goals to turn looming defeat into a 3-2 victory.....................the UNDER 23s had got the weekend off to a better start having kicked off an hour earlier at Wadham Lodge against Sporting Hackney  and returned with a 2-2 draw. A slight setback to their top spot hopes but they are only 9 points behind current leaders Philip United and have a game in hand too.  They will have the chance to cut the lead to 6 points next Friday (24th) when Philip United visit Coles Park..........on Sunday the WOMEN exited the Capital Womens Senior Cup through a penalty shooy out after an incident packed and even game with National League London Seaward.  The visting goal-keeper was injured and replaced after a few minutes play.  Borough went behind midway through the half as a result of indecisive defending of a free kick.  We stepped up a gear after the interval and in the first 15 minutes had spurned a number of good chances and the substitute 'keper had made a superb save of a penalty. A few minutes later Ronnell Humes sent in a dipping shot fom 30 yards or so which scraped the crossbar and bounced up into the net.   Both teams made but wasted several chances to win the match but a penalty shoot out could not be avoided;  and who scored Seaward's 5th and decisive kick - the substitute 'keeper of course.   This was the third consecutive season Seaward have visited Coles Park for a Cup game and both previous games were won by Borough on penalties after 2-2 draws........the UNDER 18s whose are fast running ot of fixtures in their 8 team Division have a home game on Monday 20th against West Essex

JOHN PATMAN MEMORIAL TROPHY WINNER

           FOR 2014/15 is:-

DARRELL COX

The presentation of the silver plate was made to Darrell at the Club’s social evening held in the Clubhouse on 4th June.   Well deserved recognition for his 38 goal haul – all the more remarkable as injury and work restricted his appearances to 30 from a possible 49 games

The Trophy is awarded annually in memory of our long term supporter, John Patman , who sadly passed away in 2013 and thus missed our hugely successful  final two years as a Level 5 Club
